About Us

Solo Baston is an umbrella organization of various Kali, Escrima, and Arnis schools. Started in 1997 with two schools (Del Mar School Martial Arts Kali-Escrima and Escrima Academy of Hawaii), the organization has added two schools - Hawaii Filipino Martial Arts School and Tobosa School Kali Escrima. Our goals and objectives are directed to Filipinos, young and old, and to non Filipinos as well. In order to preserve Unity among all races most especially within the Filipino Community, our purpose is to:

  • Perpetuate the Filipino Martial Art - its philosophy
  • Promote camaraderie
  • Culturally educate the public
  • Offer and promote youth activity in a safer environment
  • Cultivate public awareness

In 1990, a group of Filipino Martial Art Schools in Stockton, California wanted to create community service, and so they assembled and founded the Stockton Coalition. Their concerns enabled them to create an escrima tournament so successful that such event is still being presented. Several Filipino Martial Art Schools in Hawaii had the opportunity of being invited to their tournament in 1992. Our relationships with the Stockton Coalition has been strong since then. They have been instrumental in assisting Solo Baston.

Back in 1993, several escrima schools in Hawaii were in the verge of creating an association (with the help of the Stockton Coalition) that would promote the Art of Kali Escrima in a positive connotation through some type of full contact tournament. Unfortunately, it never developed, and the project was left untouched.

Three years later, Maestro Mike del Mar of the Del Mar School of Filipino Martial Arts Kali/Escrima continued his dream in promoting the Art. In 1997, he spearheaded his first full contact tournament at Pearl City High School. He expected only a small turnout. With the help of his wife, Maestra Josephine "Joey" del Mar of the Escrima Academy of Hawaii, his first annual tournament was a great success. At the tournament, representatives of the Stockton Coalition came over to assist with the tournament as judging officials.

After the 1997 Escrima Tournament, Guro Pat Amantiad of the Hawaii Filipino Martial Arts School joined the core group to coordinate and ran the 2nd Annual Solo Baston Escrima Tournament. The full contact tournament was held at Haleiwa Gym on the Island of Oahu in 1998 with even greater success. Representatives of the Stockton group (Bahala Na) came over not only assisted in the tournament as judges but also participated as well.

The 3rd Annual Solo Baston Escrima Tournament took place on September 18, 1999 at the Palama Settlement Gym in Kalihi (Honolulu). This time, it was Maestra Joey of the Escrima Academy of Hawaii who coordinated the tournament. Tobosa School of Kali Escrima under the direction of Maestro Don Mendoza joined the core group and helped with the tournament. Also, Instructor John Lau and Anthony Acdan of the ............. helped with the tournament as an affiliate school.

The 4th Annual Solo Baston Escrima Tournament is in the planning under the direction of Maestro Don Mendoza of the Tobosa School of Kali Escrima.
